Voiceovers

Vanessa Jones, Animated Character Voices

Animated characters are full of personality. Good character voice overs demonstrate emotional range, often within a short time span. They also require imagination and just the right pacing. Even when an animated character is following a trope – the absent-minded professor, the awkward outcast – the skilled voice actor must make the character a believable individual who is relatable and complex.

Animated characters have internal lives that the voice talent must bring out. Cartoon characters often have particular vocal qualities or sounds they make that betray some of what is going on in their internal world.

Vanessa’s background in acting and improvisation helps her play with her character voices and get to the heart of what makes her animated characters tick.

What People are Saying…

"Vanessa was so awesome to work with! I had a tight deadline and she was able to deliver the voiceover the same day. I liked how she asked me questions to make sure she could bring the character to life the way I imagined, which leads me to the next thing I really appreciated: Her being so patient with me. The character she voiced was Imu (One Piece) for a fanfic trailer of mine. If you know who this character is, you can probably get an idea of how tricky this character to voice is. And as such, I wasn't able to offer a whole lot of help on tone and emotion. But she was patient with my responses (which involved a lot of rambling, sorry Vanessa!) to her questions. She exceeded my expectations by doing multiple different takes so I could see which one I liked since I couldn't nail down a specific voice. All in all, she went above and beyond, and I will definitely ask for her assistance in future projects!"
